Unlike many motorcycle manufacturers’ purpose modified versions, these factory VM Round Slides are both 2 and 4 stroke compatible and are regarded by the factory to be the best performing version of this carburetor ever made. I am not sure which version carb you have as mikuni made several versions over the years, but the idle speed and mix setting are all the same for any VM carb.The Mikuni VM34-275 is supplied with the following factory jetting installed: 5 turns per pilot change ie if a 40 pilot is used at 1.25, a 42.5 would land the screw around 1.5-1.75, provided no other changes were made ie slide or air jet change. Pilot changes to screw change ratios equate to. If the screw needs wound out to more that 2.25 turns, the next leaner pilot should be used. If you have to set the screw less than 1.25 turns to make the bike idle correctly, the next size larger pilot should be used. The target screw setting should be 1.5 to 2 turns out.

Turn it out 1/4 turn at a time, giving the motor a few seconds to respond, until the motor runs at the highest speed, then turn it in about 1/8 to 1/4 in and you’re done. You should notice the rpm drop and the engine idle rough. To tune this, start the bike and warm it up, then adjust the idle speed screw to the target rpm around 1000-1500, then wind the screw in to 1 turn.
